Madera Hammocks

Minimalism is on the trend in many markets, including camping. This is an interesting concept because to be a minimalist it isn't about having smaller stuff it's about having LESS. Regardless the ultralight market for backpacking seems to be a spin off of that same minimalist trend which I really can't complain about! I personally carry a pretty small pack so I decided to look into light weight alternatives for a tent. My tent is fine but if I ever do any solo trips I want to test an alternative out before hitting the trails. While searching I came across hammock camping. Some people find that hammocks don't provide enough structure to be comfortable while sleeping or you run the risk o not having trees at your campsite when get to your destination. Finally after much deliberation I decided to get one. Prices and quality really range and I wasn't totally sure what I was looking for at the time. I ended up buying my first hammock from Madera outdoor co. Although, I spent most of the summer last year using my tent when I was with other people, I did get to try out my hammock during the day a couple times. I have a two person Apache hammock pictured below (which I will hopefully add a bug net to sometime this summer).

Pros:
  • Light weight
  • Can hold two people (comfortably)
  • Comes with a travel pouch
  • Probably one of the prettier options out there
  • Has a variety of accessories including tarps and bug nets that fit their hammocks
  • Long enough for someone over 6 ft
  • Seems like it is pretty durable. They are made from parachute material but I will update if I have any issues
  • Can be shipped outside of the U.S.
  • Plant trees with purchases

Cons:

  • Can be pricey if you live outside of the U.S. (Spin the wheel at the bottom of the page in the link below for a discount!)
  • The straps are a little narrow. This does not have much impact on the hammock but be conscious of the trees you are hanging it on so you do not damage the bark.

Overall the hammock seems to be a good buy! They can be purchased from the link below:
